A Memoir and a Reminder to Look Closer

Last week, we stepped out of our usual cadence of meetings and client work to enjoy something entirely different. HB team members attended a book signing for New York Times bestseller Strangers: A Memoir of Marriage by Belle Burden at Bedford Books, led by Fran Hauser, a friend of the firm. What began as a fun literary event quickly became something more: a thoughtful discussion of the often-unseen forces that shape people's lives.

The book is a deeply personal account of the sudden unraveling of a 20-year marriage. Through Burden's story, readers see how traditional roles can leave one partner vulnerable when important financial details are not fully shared, understood, or accessible. Her account moves through the shock of betrayal, the disorientation of discovering a life that had been partly hidden, and the painful realization that love, trust, and financial dependence can become dangerously entangled when transparency is missing. Burden’s memoir is also a reminder that money is rarely just money; it can represent power, agency and vulnerability.

As we learned more about her story, we were struck by how closely some of the themes in Burden's experience connect to situations families face in moments of transition in our private wealth practice. We often guide clients through pivotal moments, beyond divorce, with similar levels of complexity. We often support families through aging transitions, proactive estate planning, estate settlements, business transactions, or any period when decision-making passes from one person to another. In each case, our focus extends beyond the numbers to the people behind them, helping clients navigate these moments with clarity and confidence.

In finance, an industry where women have not always had equal voice or visibility, it was especially meaningful to be in a room shaped by women’s perspectives. Burden's story sounded incredibly familiar and surfaced a reality many families encounter, calling to ask perhaps uncomfortable, yet important questions.

Do you have a full understanding of your family’s financial structure? Are you talking about it regularly as life evolves? Do both partners in a relationship feel secure with the knowledge they have? If the answer is no to either question, then how can you approach a new path to clarity and transparency?

Across the families we advise, we often see versions of a disconnect. A plan may be thoughtfully designed, an account may be properly titled, or a document may be carefully drafted, yet all the people connected to those decisions may not feel fully equipped to understand or act on them. That gap can remain invisible for years, until stress or transition brings it to the surface. In those moments, the issue is not always whether a plan exists, but whether the people who need to rely on it understand the structure, the intent, and what comes next.

At Hollow Brook, our work extends well beyond structuring portfolios and investment strategy. We help clients build a clear, practical understanding of their financial picture so that it is not only accurate, but approachable and easy to understand. That understanding extends to spouses, children, trustees, or others who may be called upon to help carry a plan forward.

This is not about expecting every family member to become a financial expert. It is about creating enough clarity and context, so everyone feels comfortable. For clients who may not always feel comfortable in the financial world, that often means helping translate complexity into confidence, step by step, and making sure the right people know where to turn. After the event, we reflected on how often our work comes back to the same idea: simplifying complexity so people can make thoughtful decisions in moments that matter. By sharing her deeply personal and vulnerable story, Burden invites readers to confront ambiguity rather than look away from it. As financial advisors, we could not agree more.

We left with signed copies in hand, but more importantly, with a renewed appreciation for the human side of what we do. We remain committed to ensuring the individuals and families we serve feel informed, supported, and never in the dark.
